Summers here are long, hot and humid, and a house that is not cooled properly can be hard to sleep in from June to September. The same unit, if it is a reverse-cycle model, can also take the chill off a winter evening in a stone house that has no central heating. Getting that right depends on choosing the correct system, fitting it well and looking after it afterwards.
Dragon Reforms has worked across the north Costa Blanca since 1999. Why it matters here
Heat, humidity and salt air all shape which system suits your property.
The north Costa Blanca has hot summers and mild winters. Nights in July and August can stay warm, and humidity close to the coast makes the heat feel heavier. A home with thick walls and shuttered windows copes better than most, but few properties stay comfortable through a long heatwave without some form of cooling.
The mild winters matter too. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, but evenings and early mornings can feel cold indoors, particularly in older stone houses and in apartments that are not heated. A heat pump unit that also heats gives many owners a more practical answer than a separate electric heater.
Salt air is the other local factor. Outdoor units near the sea are exposed to a corrosive atmosphere, and units that are not looked after can deteriorate faster than the same equipment inland. Positioning, protection and regular servicing all help.
Then there are holiday homes. Many properties here stand empty for weeks, and a system that has not run for months needs checking before it is relied on. We take that pattern into account when we recommend and maintain equipment.
Installation
A good installation is mostly in the details you do not see afterwards.
We fit single split units, multi-split systems that serve several rooms from one outdoor unit, and ducted systems for larger homes. The right choice depends on the layout, how many rooms you want to cool, how much wall space is available and what you are prepared to see on the outside of the building.
Installation includes the indoor and outdoor units, the pipework between them, the condensate drain, the electrical connection and commissioning. Pipe runs are kept as short and tidy as the building allows, and drainage is planned so that water goes where it should rather than down a neighbour’s wall.
If you are replacing an old unit, we can often reuse parts of the existing route, though that depends on its condition. Where pipework or wiring is not suitable, we say so and explain the alternative. Old equipment is removed as part of the job.
Because many of our clients are away for much of the year, we can agree dates in advance, arrange access and send an update when the work is finished.
Sizing
Bigger is not better. The right capacity is the one that suits the space.
An undersized unit runs flat out and never quite cools the room. An oversized one cycles on and off, can leave the air feeling clammy and tends to be less pleasant to live with. Choosing capacity is therefore one of the more important decisions in any installation.
We look at the size of the room, the height of the ceiling, how much sun it receives, the number and size of windows, the insulation of the roof and walls, and how many people normally use it. A south-facing living room under a flat roof asks more of a unit than a shaded bedroom on the ground floor.
Open-plan spaces and rooms that connect to terraces need particular thought, as do kitchens and rooms with a lot of glass. In those cases we may suggest more than one indoor unit rather than a single powerful one.

Servicing
Regular attention keeps a system efficient, quiet and reliable.
Filters collect dust, pollen and the fine grit that blows in on warm days. When they clog, airflow drops, the unit works harder and smells can develop. Cleaning filters is the simplest job, and one that many owners can do themselves between visits, but a proper service goes further.
A service typically covers cleaning the filters and indoor coil, checking the condensate drain, inspecting the outdoor unit and its fixings, and testing that the system cools and heats as it should. Near the coast we pay particular attention to corrosion on the outdoor unit and its brackets.
The best time to service a system is before the summer, not during the first heatwave when everyone wants the same thing. For holiday homes, a check before the first visit of the season avoids arriving to find the unit not working.
We can agree a regular service for a single home, a group of apartments or a commercial property, so that you do not have to remember to book it.
Repairs
We find the cause before we suggest the repair.
Common problems include a unit that runs but does not cool, water leaking from the indoor unit, unusual noise, a smell when it starts, or an error code on the display. Several of these have simple causes, such as a blocked drain or dirty filter. Others need a closer look at the electronics or the refrigerant circuit.
We diagnose first and explain what we have found in plain terms, along with the options. If a repair is sensible, we quote for it. If the unit is old, repeatedly failing or difficult to find parts for, we will tell you honestly when replacement is the better use of your money.
Where a fault is linked to the installation itself, such as poor drainage or a badly positioned outdoor unit, we can correct that rather than treating the symptom.
For rental owners and businesses, a failed system can mean complaints or lost trade, so we aim to deal with urgent faults as quickly as our schedule allows and keep you informed about timing.
Heating and cooling
One system that works in summer and in the cooler months.
Most modern split systems are reverse-cycle heat pumps: they remove heat from a room in summer and, when switched to heating, bring heat in from the outside air in winter. For a climate like ours, where winters are mild rather than harsh, that is often all the heating a room needs.
This works well in living rooms and bedrooms that are used daily, and in second homes where you want a room warm quickly without running a heating system for the whole house. It tends to be gentler on the electricity bill than resistive electric heaters, though the result depends on the unit, the insulation and how you use it.
Heat pumps work best in rooms that hold warmth. Poorly insulated spaces with large single-glazed windows will feel the difference, and we will say if a room is likely to disappoint. Sometimes a small improvement elsewhere is worth discussing alongside the installation.
If you are considering heating as well as cooling, tell us at the outset. It can affect the model we recommend and where the indoor unit is best placed.
Efficiency and control
Choose equipment that is comfortable to run, and easy to manage from anywhere.
Inverter units adjust their output rather than switching fully on and off, which generally makes them quieter, steadier and more economical to run than older fixed-speed models. If you are replacing a unit that is many years old, the difference in comfort and running cost can be noticeable.
Many current units come with wifi control through a phone app. For a holiday home this is genuinely useful: you can cool the house before you arrive, check that nobody has left a unit running and adjust the settings without being there. Timers and schedules help on ordinary homes as well.
Efficiency also comes from how a system is used. Closing shutters during the hottest part of the day, keeping filters clean and not setting the temperature lower than necessary all help. We are happy to talk through sensible settings when we hand over the system.

Property types
Each type of property raises different questions.
Villas and town houses usually give plenty of options for positioning units, and larger homes often suit multi-split or ducted systems. Fincas can have thick stone walls, high ceilings and long distances between rooms, so the layout of the pipework and the choice of units need careful thought.
Apartments are different. The outdoor unit often has to sit on a balcony, terrace or designated area, and the building’s community may have its own arrangements about appearance, noise and drainage. Please check what the community and the owners’ association will permit before work begins, and we will plan around what you find out.
Noise matters too, for you and for your neighbours. We consider where the outdoor unit sits in relation to bedrooms and windows, and how it will look from the street or from neighbouring properties.
For shops, offices and other commercial premises, we look at opening hours, how many people use the space, the heat given off by equipment and how to arrange the work with minimum disruption.
