Disability Living Benidorm

Accessible bathrooms, walk-in showers and safer kitchens for Benidorm apartments and old town homes, designed around lifts, narrow doors and shared buildings.

Benidorm is a town of apartments. Tall blocks line the seafront and climb the streets behind it, and most of the people who live or stay here do so on a floor reached by a lift. That shapes everything about adapting a home in Benidorm. You are rarely dealing with a garden or a long drive. You are dealing with a bathroom of a fixed size, a front door of a fixed width and a building that has rules about what can be changed.

Plenty of Benidorm apartments belong to retired couples who have spent half their lives here, and to families who return each year. Both groups find the same things hard as time goes on: a high-sided shower tray, a slippery tiled floor, a narrow bathroom door, a toilet that is hard to get up from. These are all things we deal with in apartments of this kind.

Dragon Reforms has worked across the north Costa Blanca since 1999. We look at each apartment as it is and tell you what is realistic before you spend anything. The quotation is free and our work is guaranteed, with the scope set out in the quotation.

Compact bathrooms

Getting a Walk-In Shower Into a Benidorm Apartment Bathroom

The typical Benidorm apartment bathroom is small and square, with a bath or a shower tray at one end and a toilet and basin squeezed along the side. Replacing the bath with a walk-in shower is usually the single most useful thing that can be done, and it can nearly always be done without moving the plumbing very far.

The trick is using every centimetre. A wide, frameless shower area with the floor built level, a fold-down seat on the wall rather than a freestanding stool, and a wall-hung toilet that clears the floor can turn a bathroom that feels cramped into one a person with a walking frame can enter. Sliding or outward-opening doors give back space that a swinging door takes up.

Because an apartment often has neighbours below, the waterproofing matters more than anywhere. We build the shower floor and walls as a sealed system and test it before tiling. If it leaks, it is not only your problem.

Doors and building rules

Lifts, Doorways and the Community

Before any plan is drawn, we check the route from the lift to the front door. A wheelchair or a mobility scooter has to get in, and it is surprising how often the limit is the front door or a hall corner rather than the bathroom. Widening an internal doorway is often simple. Changing the front door or anything on the common parts is a matter for the community of owners, and we say so at the start.

Some Benidorm buildings have walls that carry load, and some do not. That decides whether a bathroom can be enlarged by moving a partition. We look at what is there, and where there is doubt, we say we need to check before promising anything.

Balconies and terraces matter too. Many are tiled in smooth ceramic that is treacherous when wet, and the step from the living room is often a high one. Slip-resistant surfaces and a low threshold make it a place you can actually use.

The kitchen

Small Kitchens That Still Work for Reduced Mobility

Apartment kitchens in Benidorm are often narrow galley kitchens or an open corner of the living room. A fully lowered worktop with room for a wheelchair underneath is not always possible, but a partly lowered section for preparing food, deep drawers instead of low cupboards, and a hob and sink that can be reached from a seat often are.

In an open-plan room, a lowered worktop can be arranged so that it serves as a breakfast counter for everyone, which helps the adaptation blend into the room. We choose floor finishes that grip, and we plan sockets and lighting so that nothing has to be reached across a hot surface.

For visitors who come to stay, a few simple changes can mean the difference between a holiday that works and one that does not.

How it works

How a Disability Living Job in Benidorm Works

We visit the apartment, measure the bathroom, the doors and the route in from the lift, and talk to you about how you manage now and what you would like to change. If you have a therapist or a carer, they are welcome to be there. You then receive a written, free quotation setting out the work and its order.

Work in a flat needs courtesy to the building. We agree access times, protect the common areas and keep noise within sensible hours. Most bathroom conversions can be planned so that you are without the room for as short a time as possible, and we take you through the finished work, adjusting anything that is not right.

Questions

Disability Living Benidorm — Common Questions

Can a bath be replaced with a walk-in shower in a Benidorm apartment?

In most cases, yes. We remove the bath, build a level floor with a fall to the drain, waterproof it properly and tile it. The size of the bathroom decides the layout, and we show you the options at the visit.

Do I need permission from my community?

Work inside your own apartment generally does not involve the community, but anything to the common parts, the façade or shared pipework does. We tell you early on if something you want falls into that category.

Can you widen doorways in an apartment?

Often we can widen internal doors. It depends on whether the wall is load-bearing, so we check first. A sliding door is another option when there is no room for a door to swing.

Do you offer disability living work in Benidorm for holiday apartments?

Yes. Many owners want their apartment to work for older relatives or guests who find steps and trays hard. We can adapt the bathroom and add rails without making the apartment look clinical.
