Altea is built on a hill, and its houses reflect it: narrow-fronted town houses in the old town, and villas stepping down towards the sea. Windows and doors here are rarely a simple like-for-like swap.
Walk through the old town and you see how varied the openings are. Thick walls, deep reveals, shutters, arched doorways and small windows set at odd heights are all part of the charm, and also part of the difficulty when something needs replacing.
On the coastal side, the villas and apartments have the opposite brief: big glazed areas to take in the view, doors out to a terrace, and frames that cope with salt air and strong light. The same firm can handle both, but the approach is different.

Access can be tight on a steep street, which affects how materials are delivered and how long a job takes. We plan around this rather than discovering it on the day.

Villas by the sea

Villas looking out to the Mediterranean are about the view, so owners often ask for larger glazed doors and slim frames. Aluminium suits these big openings well, and good hardware and finish matter more near the coast because salt will find any weak point.
Sun is the other factor. A fully glazed living room is lovely in winter and demanding in August, so we look at glass, blinds and shutters together as one system rather than separate purchases.
If you are replacing worn sliding doors, the tracks and seals are often the problem. We will tell you honestly whether the frame can be rescued or is better replaced.
Second homes
Security and Upkeep When the House Is Empty
Altea has a lot of holiday and second homes, some of them in quiet lanes where nobody passes for weeks. A strong entrance door, firm locking and shutters on ground-floor openings are sensible, and neighbours often find they notice less happening around a house that looks well looked after.
A simple maintenance check once or twice a year keeps sliding doors running and seals sound. We can look over the openings and give you a short list.
Where an old wooden door is beyond repair, a new one can be made to match the original style while locking much more securely.
