Altea's old houses climb a hill in thick walls and stairs, while its villas spread out below. A new shower in either needs a different plan, and we begin by understanding how your building is put together.
Houses in the old town of Altea have been altered many times. Walls are thick, floors are not always flat, and a bathroom may have been squeezed into a spare corner decades ago. Adding a modern shower to such a room asks for patience and a good eye.
Down towards the sea and across the hillsides, villas offer more space but different challenges: long pipe runs, large en-suites and a wish for bathrooms that open to light and views. Here a wet room can make full use of the room you have.
We have worked around Altea since 1999. Everything in the shower area is done by our own people: plumbing, tiling, carpentry and building, directed by one manager, and we say honestly what each building will and will not allow before you commit to anything.
Old town
An old Altea house rarely has a square bathroom. Walls lean, floors dip and the original builders never imagined a shower tray. We measure in detail, test the floor with levels and design the base to suit the room, rather than forcing a standard layout into it.
Thick walls have advantages. They hide pipework well and take fixings firmly, which helps with glass and grab rails. They also make chasing for new pipes a bigger task, so we plan routes carefully and avoid breaking more of the wall than the job requires.
Access is its own problem on steep streets and stairs. Materials may arrive by hand over several trips, and waste has to leave the same way. We build that into the programme and the quotation so nobody is surprised once the work starts.
Floors
Older floors in Altea can be solid or can be formed from beams and infill, and the difference matters. A solid slab lets us recess a drain with confidence. A lighter structure may need us to raise the new base slightly or choose a drain with a shallower body.
We lift a small area at the survey where we can, to see what lies below. It is far better to know before you choose a design, because the lowest point of the drain controls how gently the floor can slope towards it.
If the floor shows movement or old damp, we say so. A shower sealed over a weak floor will not last, and the honest answer may be to deal with the structure first. Our builders and damp specialists work from the same team.
Coastal villas
Villas around Altea often have bedrooms with their own bathrooms and generous floor area. That makes a full wet room possible, with a sloping floor, a fixed glass panel and no tray at all, giving a calm, uncluttered look that suits bright rooms.
With more space, finishes can go further. Porcelain panels, continuous floor tile and a long niche for storage all work well. A rainfall head and a hand shower together suit different household members, and we pipe both with their own controls.
Sea air and sun are part of daily life here, so fittings should cope with humidity. We recommend sturdy finishes and good extraction, and we discuss how often the villa is empty, since stagnant water in a rarely used shower is worth planning for.
How it works
Everything starts with a look at the room. We trace the waste pipe, test the floor with a level and listen to what you want, then draft a quotation, free of charge, setting out the base, the sealing layer, the finishes and which of our people does each stage.
Once underway, strip-out gives way to pipework, the base, sealing and tiling. Each hidden layer is photographed before it is covered, and at the end we go over the finished shower with you. If you live overseas, we look after keys and access.
Questions
Often yes, although each room is different. We measure carefully, check the floor and waste pipe, and design a base that suits uneven walls. If something will not work, we tell you at the survey and suggest alternatives.
Frequently, especially on a concrete floor with enough space for a gentle fall. We assess the structure first, then say if a fully drained floor or a shower zone with one fixed pane serves you better.
We plan deliveries and waste removal around the street, stairs and parking, and include it in the programme. It affects timing more than the result, and we explain how in the quotation before you agree to anything.
Sometimes a little, to route new pipes or hide valves. We plan the route to disturb as little as possible and make good afterwards. You see where the work will go before we start cutting.
