Polop's older houses have bathrooms that were added late and fitted in tightly. We survey the floor, the walls and the waste run first, then build a shower that suits the building rather than fighting it.
Polop is a small inland village of older houses, with villas on the slopes around it. Where coastal towns are dominated by flats, here a bathroom is more likely to sit in a house that has grown room by room over many years.
That history shows in the floor and walls. A bathroom may have been carved from a former store or landing, with a floor of different thickness to the rooms around it, and a waste pipe that has been rerouted more than once.
Our work in this part of the world goes back to 1999. Plumbing, building and tiling are done by our own people managed by one person, and we spell out what the house will take before asking you to commit.
Older floors
In an older Polop house the floor can be stone, old tile over rubble, or a timber structure covered in screed. Each handles a shower differently. Solid floors accept a recessed drain; timber needs stiffening and special care with sealing.
We check by lifting tiles, drilling a test hole or simply looking from below if there is access. The findings control how low the drain sits and how gently the base can slope, and they decide whether the new floor has to rise a little.
If the floor has moved or is weak, we recommend dealing with that first. A tiled, sealed shower over a floor that flexes will crack. Our builders can strengthen the structure so the shower rests on something dependable.
Thick walls
Walls in village houses are often thick and sometimes uneven. They take fixings well, which helps with glass and rails, but they can hide old pipes, flues and cables. We check carefully before cutting a niche or chasing a new pipe.
A recessed shelf is a good use of wall thickness, as it keeps bottles off the floor without adding clutter. Its back and sides need the same waterproofing as the rest of the shower, and the base should fall slightly outwards so water does not sit.
Where the wall shows old damp, we investigate. Stone and render can hold moisture, and a new shower should not be built against a damp surface. Our damp proofing specialists can look at the cause alongside the bathroom work.
Staying put
Plenty of Polop owners have made the village their permanent home. For them, a shower with no step to climb is not a luxury but a practical decision about how they want to live in the house in ten or twenty years.
We can fit a bench or fold-down seat, a grab rail set at a suitable height and a wall-hung toilet that gives space to move. Positions are set around the person who will use them, and we agree them with you before the walls are tiled.
Village houses often have stairs and narrow doors. If wider changes are needed, the Disability Living service can review the whole home. We will quote a shower on its own or a longer plan, whichever fits.
How it works
A visit allows us to study the floor, the walls and the waste pipe, and to hear your wishes. Options are discussed candidly, including any structural matter needing attention, and a free written quotation then sets out each stage.
Next come strip-out, any adjustment to floor or pipework, the base, sealing, tiles and the screen. Hidden stages are photographed for you, and a final inspection takes place with you present or over a video call.

In most cases, yes. We look at floors, walls and the waste run before designing anything and design to suit what we find. If part of the structure needs work, we explain it plainly before you agree to anything.
A shower can still work, but the floor needs checking and sometimes stiffening, and the waterproofing must be done with extra care. We tell you what is involved at the survey so the choice is an informed one.
Yes. A step-free base, a fixed seat, support rails and a raised wall-mounted toilet can all be planned. They are fixed to solid backing, with positions agreed with you. Wider changes can be reviewed through Disability Living.
Yes. Villas on the slopes often have larger bathrooms and suit wet rooms, while village houses call for closer attention to floors and walls. We adapt the design and programme to the building in front of us.
