Polop is a small inland village where older houses cluster around narrow streets and villas spread across the hillsides. Terrace work here often means repairing something old rather than building something new.
In the village itself, many homes are old and built of stone and render. Their outdoor space is often a small patio, a first-floor terrace or a flat roof that has been used as a terrace over the years.
These terraces may have been repaired many times, with layers of different materials. Before anything new goes on, the existing build-up has to be understood.
On the hillsides around, the villas have larger terraces that behave like those elsewhere in the area, though without the salt of the coast.
Old houses
A village house terrace may be built over old timber beams, vaults or thick stone walls. We examine how it was built before choosing the repair, because the right method depends on it.
Flat roofs that became terraces often have several coverings. Stripping back to a sound surface and waterproofing properly is usually better than adding another layer.
Damp that has entered walls beneath the terrace can be treated with our damp proofing work once the source is stopped.
Stone and mortar
Repointing is a major part of work on old terraces. Open joints let water into walls and steps. We use a mortar appropriate to the stone and the age of the building.
For floors, sandstone, travertine or stone-effect porcelain all fit village houses. The choice depends on the sun, the use and how much upkeep you want.
Small terraces gain a lot from careful detailing: neat edges, a clean junction with the walls and well-placed drains.
Hillside villas
Villas around Polop usually have bigger terraces, sometimes with pools. Slopes mean drainage deserves attention, and the paving around existing pools can be renewed with a non-slip finish.
Shade is valuable in summer. Our carpentry team can build a timber pergola, and lighting and sockets can be installed as part of the same project.
Owners who live elsewhere for most of the year can rely on us for updates and photos.
