In Calpe the shower is the first stop after the beach. We build walk-in showers and wet rooms that handle sand, salt and busy weeks, whether you own a flat near the sand or a villa under the Peñón.
Calpe has two main types of home: apartments within reach of the beach and villas on the hillsides beneath the Peñón de Ifach. Both want a shower, and both wear one out, though in different ways.
In a flat near the sea, the shower is used constantly by people coming in from the beach. Sand finds its way into the drain, salt marks the fittings and the room often belongs to several family members in one week.
We began working on this coast in 1999. Plumbers, tilers and builders are all in our own team and run by one manager, we speak English and Spanish, and owners overseas hear from us from the first visit until the last tile.
Sand and drains
Sand is the quiet enemy of a seaside shower. It collects in the trap, slows the drain and scratches glass and tile if it is dragged around. A drain with a removable basket or cover that lifts out means it can be emptied in a moment.
Floor falls help too. If the base slopes smoothly and the surface is not too rough, water carries grit towards the drain instead of leaving it behind. We lay out the falls before tiling and check them with water on site.
A rinse area helps in some homes. A shower close to the entrance, sealed and well drained, lets people wash off before they cross the house. We can plan the layout so the route from door to shower is short and tiled.
Under the Peñón
Villas on the hillsides give more room to play with. A walk-in shower can be generous, with a long bench, a window or glazed door and finishes that echo the stone and warm light for which the area is known.
Light brings a design question. A big window in a wet room needs a well-sealed sill and a screen that stops water reaching it, and privacy glass or a good blind may be needed depending on the plot. We discuss it with you at the survey.
Because villas often have a terrace nearby, we also think about connections to the outdoors. A level shower close to a terrace door gives guests somewhere to rinse before coming inside, as long as the threshold is sealed.
Holiday lets
If your Calpe property is rented out, a shower should be obvious to use, fast to clean and tough. Single-lever mixers, wide glass panels and big tiles suit this better than fashionable features that guests cannot work out.
Safety counts as well. Visitors do not know the room, so a level entrance and a floor with decent grip prevent slips. That helps older guests and anyone carrying children, and it removes a step to trip on.
We can also advise on durability for changeover days. Hardwearing sealant, replaceable seals and fittings available from regular suppliers make later repairs quicker, which matters when the next guests are due.
How it works
We call at the property to measure, inspect the drain and see what the floor is made of. After a conversation about how the place is used, we write a free quotation listing the stages, the finishes and who is responsible for each part.
The sequence goes from strip-out to plumbing, base, sealing and tiling, then the screen and fittings. Photographs arrive as the job moves forward, and we run water through the drain and examine the finished shower with you or by video.
Questions
Generally, yes. The bath comes out and a sealed base and drain go in, depending on where the waste pipe leaves the room. The survey shows if a flush floor is possible or a low kerb is needed.
Choose a drain with a removable basket or a lift-out cover, and give the floor a smooth, consistent fall. Rinsing sandy feet before stepping in helps as well. We can suggest layouts that make this routine easy.
Often. It is easy to clean, easy to use and safer for guests than a deep tub. We choose robust fittings and simple controls so changeovers are quick and later repairs are straightforward.
In some cases, subject to the wall and what is allowed. At the survey we find out, and tell you, whether the town hall is likely to need asking. A sealed sill and sensible screen keep water off the window.
