A wardrobe near the sea has a tougher life than most furniture. In Calpe, within sight of the Peñón de Ifach, the way a unit is ventilated and fixed matters as much as how it looks on the day it is finished.
Shut a bedroom for a few weeks in a seafront apartment and the air inside turns heavy. Clothes in a cupboard pressed against an outer wall are the first to smell. That is a design problem, and it can be solved with an air gap, vents and the right boards, rather than by hoping for the best.
Calpe's housing divides roughly into flats near the water and villas on the slopes around the rock. The flats call for compact, well-ventilated units. The villas have more room, but terraces and sea views bring bright light and big temperature swings that can test cheaper materials and hinges.
Our firm has been working along this stretch of coast since 1999, with plenty of jobs around the rock and in the streets below it. Surveying, making and fitting are all done by our carpenters, and your quotation spells out the guarantee on completed work.
Salt air
Salt carried on the breeze finds its way indoors, even through closed windows. Cheap steel hinges and runners pick up rust spots, drawer slides stiffen, and the staining can spread onto the door finish. We discuss better-quality fittings with you before ordering, and explain the price difference plainly.
Boards matter as well. Some chipboards swell at the edges when moisture reaches them, and the edging peels. Moisture-resistant core boards and well-sealed edges last longer in a humid bedroom. We show you samples and say which options we would choose for a flat close to the beach.
No finish is permanent, and we would rather you knew that. Wipe-down habits, regular airing and a quick look at the hinges each year are what keep a coastal wardrobe in good condition, and we are happy to explain the routine when we hand over.
Damp walls
A wardrobe built hard against a north- or sea-facing outer wall traps cold, damp air behind it. In Calpe we see mould spots on the rear panel and on clothes that were left alone for a season. The remedy starts before anything is built.
At the survey we press, look and smell. If the wall shows staining or crumbling paint, we suggest dealing with the source first, which might be a leak, condensation or a failed render. Our damp proofing team can be brought in, and the wardrobe is built once the wall is dry.
Where the wall is sound, we hold the unit slightly off it, leave a ventilated gap and fit a breathable back. Sometimes an air-conditioning unit that dries the room for part of the day is the simplest extra protection for a flat left empty.
Villas
Villas climbing the hillsides around Calpe have bigger bedrooms, often with terrace doors facing the view. Strong sun can fade dark finishes and warp thin boards that sit near glass, so we position units and choose surfaces with that in mind.
With more room to play with, we plan fuller interiors: tall hanging for dresses, a bank of drawers and a pull-out tie or belt rack. A long wall of hinged doors can look wonderful in a master suite, provided the hinges are strong enough for their size.
Many villa owners also keep a guest bedroom ready for visitors. We build the guest wardrobe finished to match the master suite so the whole house feels consistent, and we keep the interior simple so it is easy to air out.
How it works
We start by visiting the property, measuring the wall and checking its condition, with particular attention to outer walls, window reveals and any sign of moisture. Then we talk through how often the room is used and what will be stored.
Once you approve the free written quotation in writing, the unit is made in our workshop and installed on an agreed date. If you live elsewhere we send photos, and we leave a short note on keeping the finished wardrobe aired.
Questions
We leave an air gap behind the unit, add ventilation, choose moisture-resistant boards and check the wall for damp first. No wardrobe fixes a wet wall, so if that is the cause we recommend treating it before building.
Ordinary steel fixings can, because salt reaches indoors even with the windows shut. We discuss coated or stainless hardware before ordering and explain the cost difference. A little regular maintenance extends the life of hinges and runners.
Yes, provided the wall is dry and space and ventilation are left behind the unit. If it is damp or has condensation, we treat the cause first. We check this at the survey and say what we find.
Strong sun can fade some dark finishes and stress thin boards near glass. We suggest lighter or fade-resistant surfaces and place units away from direct light where we can. We show samples and advise honestly.
