The old town houses of Altea were built long before anyone measured a room in right angles. A wardrobe there has to be cut to the wall, not the other way round, and that is the work our carpenters enjoy.
Climb through the whitewashed lanes of Altea and you pass houses that have been altered many times. Walls lean slightly, ceilings step down over a doorway and a recess appears where a window was once blocked up. Off-the-shelf wardrobes seldom survive contact with rooms like these.
Outside the old town the picture changes. Altea's villas and larger coastal homes have master suites with space for dressing rooms, long runs of storage and en-suite bathrooms nearby. The wish there is to organise a lot of clothing elegantly, not to find extra centimetres.

Old town
When a wall bows, a floor falls towards one corner and the ceiling is a hand higher on one side, a flat-fronted box looks wrong however well it is made. We measure at several heights and scribe the side panels and cornice to the actual surface, so the joints are close and look deliberate.
Often the best option is to build into a recess. Old houses have deep window reveals, thick internal walls and niches left from earlier alterations. Turning one into a cupboard adds storage without taking floor space, though the depth must be checked so a rail still fits.
Access can be tricky. Lanes are narrow and some houses are up steps, so boards may need to be carried by hand. We plan the pieces to travel in sections and assemble in the room, and we tell you in the quotation if access will affect timing.
Villas
A villa bedroom can take far more than a run of wardrobe doors. A walk-in dressing room, with hanging on three walls, a central island of drawers and good lighting, gives each person their own space and keeps clothes off the chair in the corner.
We design from how you dress. Shoes at one end, long garments in a deeper section, folded clothes in drawers rather than shelves and jewellery in a shallow tray. A short list of what you own tells us more than any catalogue.
Where a dressing area has to be carved from the bedroom, we advise on partition options and how air and light reach it. If a new wall, plastering or a doorway is needed, our builders and plasterers can take care of it alongside the carpentry.
Finish
In an Altea townhouse, a glossy modern unit can jar with old beams and handmade tiles. We can offer painted doors, timber-effect boards and simple frames that sit quietly in the room, and we try to echo the proportions of existing doors and windows.
Handles and mouldings do much of the work. A plain recessed grip suits a contemporary villa, while a traditional knob and a modest cornice can make a unit feel as though it has always been there. Samples can come to the visit where we can manage it.
If you already have antique or hand-finished woodwork in the room, tell us. We would rather match a tone than force a contrast, and we are honest if a particular finish is hard to reproduce exactly, so you can decide early.
How it works
We begin with a visit. In an old Altea house that means measuring in several places on each wall, noting the beams and uneven floors, and agreeing which niches can be used. In a villa it is more about layout and the number of people sharing the space.
A written quotation follows without charge. Once the offer is accepted, the units are made in the workshop and brought to the house for fitting. If you are away, we send photographs and short videos so you can approve each stage.
Questions
Yes. We measure at several points, then cut and scribe the side panels and cornice to the real surfaces. The unit sits close to the wall instead of showing large gaps, though extremely bowed walls may need plastering first, and we say so.
Yes. We plan hanging, drawers, shoe storage and lighting around what you own, and we advise on whether the room can take a dressing area. Structural changes, if any, are covered in the same quotation.
Frequently. Old houses have deep reveals and blocked openings that make ideal cupboards. We check the depth, the wall condition and any damp before closing them in, so the new storage does not hide a problem.
We can match proportions, colour and handle style closely, and we bring samples to the survey. An exact match to aged timber can be difficult, so we say frankly what is achievable before you commit.
