Dragon Reforms has its office in Callosa d'en Sarrià, so the homes we are asked about are often streets away. Many are older village houses with solid walls, wooden beams and doors that have worked hard for decades. Joinery for such homes is part repair, part careful new work, and it begins with a conversation.
Out on the terraced hillsides, fincas bring a different mix: farm gates, outbuilding doors, pergolas for shade and stairs between levels. Timber there faces sun, rain and temperature swings, but less salt than on the coast. A good gate or pergola is therefore built heavier, and finished with more care, than its interior counterpart.
Since 1999 we have renovated homes around here, and carpentry is rarely a stand-alone task. It follows the plasterer, precedes the painter and must suit the building. We coordinate all of that under one roof. Having one team on call saves the usual wait between one trade leaving and the next arriving.
Village houses
In an older town house, carpentry begins with understanding what you already have. We check beams for rot, woodworm and sagging, floorboards for movement, and old doors for warping. Many items are worth saving; some are not, and we tell you which.
New doors in old walls need care. Openings are uneven, walls thick and frames deep. A made-to-measure door set into a proper frame looks right and stops draughts, which is often what owners notice first after the job. Draughts around old doors are often the single biggest comfort problem in a traditional house, and a proper frame cures it.
Where an old floor or ceiling is being opened up for other work, that is the moment to repair timber, because access is already there. Treating, repairing or replacing timber while the structure is exposed costs far less than doing so later, behind finished walls.
Fincas
Hillside plots call for sturdy gates that hang on sensible posts and do not drag as the ground settles. We build to suit the opening, add proper hinges and latches, and finish the timber to survive full sun. A gate that is built to last is mostly a matter of good posts, good hinges and honest timber.
A pergola over a terrace or an outdoor kitchen extends the use of the property through the summer. We design the frame so rainwater drains away, fix it securely to the structure and leave room for vines or shade cloth if you want them.
Sheds, stores and workshop doors are less glamorous but matter just as much. We make them secure and weatherproof. A properly hung, lockable door with weather protection at the threshold keeps tools, equipment and produce safe and dry through all seasons.
Interiors
Traditional houses seldom have enough cupboards. We build fitted wardrobes, alcove shelving and kitchen units that follow the slightly uneven geometry of old walls, which means scribing and trimming to fit rather than relying on standard sizes. Scribed units look like they grew there, which is the whole point in a house that predates straight lines.
Staircases can be steep, narrow or just worn. We repair treads and handrails, or build new flights where the old ones are beyond saving, and we think about safety for children and elderly relatives. Where headroom is low or the flight is steep, we explain what can be improved and what the building will not allow.
Because the same team does plastering and painting, junctions between joinery and walls are finished neatly. Because the same team plasters and paints as well, the gaps between joinery and wall are filled and finished cleanly, with no leftover shadow lines.
How it works
We call at the property, measure, look at existing timber and talk about what you want. Because we are in town, a visit can be arranged quickly. For owners overseas, photographs, a video call and a key holder serve the same purpose.
Your free quotation, in writing, lists materials, finishes and what is excluded. We tell you at the survey if anything could require town hall consent. After agreement we do the work, protect the house as we go and walk through the result with you.
Questions
Yes, where they are sound. We clean, treat and repair them, and tell you if a beam looks doubtful. Anything with a structural question goes to an appropriate specialist before we continue. We can also advise on treatment against woodworm where that is a concern.
We do. Gates are made to the opening, with robust posts, proper hinges and a finish chosen for sun and rain. We also fit them with whatever locks or automation you intend to add. We can also fit hinges strong enough for a heavy gate that swings daily.
Yes, because we measure each opening and build or trim the frame to match. A door made for the actual wall looks better and seals more effectively than a stock one. Hardware and handles are chosen to match the character of the house.
Frequently. We time joinery with plastering, electrics and painting so each trade follows the last, and one team keeps the schedule in order. It also means a single point of contact for questions along the way.
