Walk the old streets of Villajoyosa and the woodwork tells the story: tall doors, shutters on narrow facades, beams above ceilings that have seen generations. Carpentry here is often about repairing and matching, not starting from nothing. A good carpenter learns to read these buildings before touching them.
Newer apartments near the front ask for something else. Fitted wardrobes, kitchen units and balcony doors need to suit smaller rooms, a humid atmosphere and sun that fades unprotected timber. Each type of home calls for a different approach to materials and fixings.
Since 1999 our firm has worked along the Marina Baixa coast. Our carpenters work alongside our plasterers, electricians and plumbers, so a door frame, a new ceiling and a repainted wall all fit together properly. Having a single team on site avoids the usual argument over who should fix a gap.
Old streets
Townhouse openings are rarely standard. Walls lean a little, floors slope and reveals vary, so a door bought off the shelf seldom fits. We measure each opening and make or adapt doors to suit, so they hang true and close without forcing.
Exterior doors and shutters take the weather and sun. We examine frames for rot at the bottom edge and around hinges, repair what can be saved and replace what cannot. Hardware is chosen to resist coastal air as well as everyday wear.
If a facade has a distinctive look, we try to keep it. Where changes to the outside of a building may need the town hall's agreement, we say so at the survey. Sympathetic repair is usually possible, and we would rather keep what works than replace it for the sake of newness.
Beams
Old ceilings often rely on timber beams. Some are sound and simply need cleaning and treating; others have been weakened by damp, insects or earlier alterations. We inspect carefully and tell you which category yours falls into. A short visit with a torch and a screwdriver tells us a great deal, and we explain what we find in plain language.
Where a beam looks structurally compromised, that is a question for an appropriate specialist, and we will not pretend otherwise. We can then carry out the carpentry that follows from their advice. We will not guess at loads or spans, and we would rather involve the right person early than risk a problem later.
Staircases in tall narrow houses wear fast. Loose treads, wobbling rails and steep rises can often be corrected, and we advise when a replacement staircase is the better answer. New handrails and balusters also improve safety noticeably, particularly where children or older relatives use the stairs.
Flats
Smaller apartments gain a lot from well-planned storage. We design wardrobes around the room's shape, add ventilation where air could stagnate, and avoid materials that swell in humid conditions. Doors can slide where there is no space to swing. A good layout matters more than any fancy finish, and it can be completed without disturbing the rest of the flat.
Balcony doors face the harshest conditions in the flat. Sun fades finishes, salt gets into hinges and rain finds gaps. A properly made and sealed door makes a noticeable difference to comfort and noise. We check that the frame is square, that the sill drains outward and that the hardware is suitable for salty air.
For holiday flats, we favour durable surfaces and simple layouts that stand up to many different guests. Rental guests value storage that is easy to understand, with plenty of hanging space, sensible shelves and doors that do not stick, and owners value anything that survives heavy use for several seasons without repair.
How it works
We visit to measure, check the condition of existing timber and talk through how you want the finished work to look. Photographs and a video call work well if you are abroad, with a neighbour or agent providing access. Measurements are taken carefully, since small errors in an old opening lead to gaps later.
A written quotation follows without charge, and a copy goes to you by email, setting out materials, fixings and finishes. We cover floors and furniture throughout, and in buildings with shared stairs we respect neighbours and community rules. At handover we walk you through the finished work.

Yes. Old openings are rarely square, so we measure on site and build or adjust the door to match. That gives a close, even fit and avoids gaps and sticking. We also allow for slightly out-of-plumb walls, so the closed door looks even.
We repair and treat beams that are basically sound. If one looks structurally weak, we recommend an appropriate specialist first and then carry out the carpentry that follows. Treatment against woodworm, where needed, is done before any finishing coat goes on.
They can, when designed for it. We choose suitable boards and include ventilation, so air moves through even when the flat is shut for weeks. Where an exterior wall is cold or damp, we may also suggest leaving a gap behind the unit.
Often. If the frame is sound, we strip, repair and refinish. Where rot has reached the structure, replacement is more honest, and we show you the damaged areas. Hardware such as hinges and bolts is replaced with a type suited to seaside conditions.
